Exciting times! Vegan ACT now has a Mastodon instance so you can chat with your Vegan friends (and anyone else in the Fediverse) on a privacy oriented and community run social network.
If you already know about Mastodon then sign up here:
If you are confused, then read on!
What is Mastodon?
Mastodon is like Twitter but controlled by the community!
Where it differs from Twitter is that each individual community runs their own server and they connect to each other (called federation) to allow different communities to share with each other.
Mastodon isn’t a single website like Twitter or Facebook, it’s a network of thousands of communities operated by different organizations and individuals that provide a seamless social media experience.
Besides that it operates largely the same as you can expect from Twitter.
You have 500 characters. You can adjust the thumbnails of your pictures with focal points. You can use custom emojis, hide things behind spoiler warnings and choose who sees a given post. Messed it up? You can delete & redraft for quick corrections.
As described above – Mastodon is a decentralised social network and isn’t controlled by big corporations like Facebook and Twitter, meaning you are in control of your privacy and data.
Your data on the VeganACT Mastodon is under our control and will never be shared unless you choose to make your toot (like a tweet) available to users on other servers. You can also delete any of your toots or even your whole account at any time at the click of a button with nothing getting in your way.
Data sovereignty is important for everyone but as activists it is doubly important that we know how and when our data is being shared and accessed.
Okay so I hope you are excited now! All you need to do to sign up is to head on over to https://social.veganact.org.au and use the signup form. Make sure you mention you are part of the Vegan ACT community in the “Why do you want to join?” box so the admins can approve you quickly.
If you want to follow me then @email@example.com is my handle.
I look forward to seeing you all there!
